Mobile Phones Without IMEI Numbers Blocked

Mobile phones in India that do not have IMEI numbers have been blocked. It is being reported that that number could well be 25 million.

On October 29th we had carried a report that said that mobile handsets without the unique identification number, which helps authorities track users, will face disconnections by December 1. Holding true to that millions of phones have now been blocked.

The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI is a 15-digit code unique to every GSM and WCDMA and iDEN mobile phone, as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone. It can also be displayed on the screen of the phone by entering *#06# into the keypad. This number appears on the operator’s network whenever a call is made and the absence of this number makes it impossible to trace either the caller or the phone or to access call details.

According to Indian intelligence agencies, phones without IMEI numbers – that are mostly cheap, unbranded phones – have been used by militant groups to stay under the radar.

According to the Indian Cellular Association 30% of all phone sales in the country are of the unbranded ones, which are mostly imported from China.

Mobiles Without IMEI Number May Face Disconnection

Mobile handsets without the unique identification number, which helps authorities track users, will face disconnections by December 1, Indian Cellular Association (ICA) said on Wednesday.

The International Mobile Equipment Identification (IMEI) is a 15-digit code that identifies a handset and enables security agencies to track down users.

The department of telecom had recently asked the mobile operators not to allow calls to be completed on handsets without IMEI number.

Though there are no official statistics on the number of handsets without IMEI number, an industry guess was around 25 million, Pankaj Mohindroo, President, ICA said.

The Indian Cellular Association had begun a nationwide campaign to create awareness and prevent sale and purchase of such devices.

Proliferation of unbranded phone devices, without IMEI number or with invalid or cloned numbers posed a serious threat to national security as they could not be tracked, he said.

These devices are mainly sourced from China and are adversely impacting the organized mobile devices market apart from causing huge loss in revenue to the government, he said.

4.1 Billion SMS Messages Are Sent Daily

4.1 Billion SMS Messages Are Sent Daily

he mobile industry is on a tear. The CTIA semi-annual wireless industry survey has just been released, and while numbers showing robust mobile broadband growth are no surprise, data released on consumer text messaging behavior certainly caught our attention.

According to the survey, over 740 billion text messages were sent over carrier networks in the US during the first half of 2009. To put that astronomical number into perspective, it boils down to 4.1 billion SMS messages being sent daily, which is also nearly twice as many as sent during the same time period last year.

Other interesting findings include:

- Wireless consumers used 1.1 trillion million minutes of call time in the first half of the year

- Wireless service revenues neared $76 billion for the first six months of 2009

- There are currently over 276 million wireless users

If anything, the survey data certainly backs up the reasoning behind the FCC Chairman’s Mobile Broadband Agenda, announced earlier today, which is designed to support the increase in wireless traffic by unleashing spectrum and removing obstacles around 4G network deployment.
