t appears that the Nexus One’s speech-to-text function performs the digital equivalent of washing your mouth out with soap.

Reuters discovered that the innovative voice recognition feature converts swear words into a string of # symbols when rendered into text.

Why the censorship? A spokesperson from Google says the “feature” is less about sanitizing users’ speech and more about making sure curse words don’t accidentally appear in transcriptions erroneously, a real possibility given the early and not always accurate state of voice recognition technology.

“We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognize a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent,” the statement said.

Fair enough. Although that seems to imply that one day, when the technology improves, Nexus One users may see their right to be foul-mouthed returned. One can only ###ing hope.

For some strange reason though we’ve been getting a lot of traffic with readers leaving their IMEI numbers in our comments, which is not a good idea since we can’t do this for you as it requires you to enter your own personal information on the site.

Mobile phones in India that do not have IMEI numbers have been blocked. It is being reported that that number could well be 25 million.

On October 29th we had carried a report that said that mobile handsets without the unique identification number, which helps authorities track users, will face disconnections by December 1. Holding true to that millions of phones have now been blocked.

The International Mobile Equipment Identity or IMEI is a 15-digit code unique to every GSM and WCDMA and iDEN mobile phone, as well as some satellite phones. It is usually found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone. It can also be displayed on the screen of the phone by entering *#06# into the keypad. This number appears on the operator’s network whenever a call is made and the absence of this number makes it impossible to trace either the caller or the phone or to access call details.

According to Indian intelligence agencies, phones without IMEI numbers – that are mostly cheap, unbranded phones – have been used by militant groups to stay under the radar.

According to the Indian Cellular Association 30% of all phone sales in the country are of the unbranded ones, which are mostly imported from China.

Hackers are spreading a vicious computer virus through spam email messages that urge recipients to visit a bogus website offering vaccinations to protect them against another virus – the one that causes swine flu.

The email purports to be from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, directing them to what looks like an official government website to fill out a vaccination form, said researchers from security firms Symantec Corp and AppRiver. Security researchers said they began seeing millions of spam messages on Tuesday as part of a scheme to infect computers with malicious software that lets hackers take control of computers. The hacker-controlled site then automatically downloads malicious software onto a victim’s PC. Once in control of the computer, the hackers can use a compromised machine to commit identity theft, attack other computers or turn the PC into a spam server.

Bing and Yahoo have already released their lists of the most popular search terms of 2009, and now it’s time for the undisputed, heavyweight champion of search — Google, in the red trunks — to announce its rundown.

In their annual Zeitgeist report, Google crowns “Michael Jackson” as the fastest rising search term, followed by “Facebook” in second place and “Twitter” in fourth, with Spanish Facebook “Tuenti” coming in third.

As far as the fastest falling search terms go, unsurprisingly the heaviest hitters of old, such as “Euro 2008″ and “Beijing 2008,” have decreased in relevance, and certain Internet giants, such as Bebo and eMule, have obviously lost their luster.

The full list is below:

Fastest Rising Search Terms (Global):

1. michael jackson
2. facebook
3. tuenti
4. twitter
5. sanalika
6. new moon
7. lady gaga
8. windows 7
9. dantri.com.vn
10. torpedo gratis

Fastest Falling Search Terms (Global)

1. beijing 2008
2. euro 2008
3. heath ledger
4. barack obama
5. amy winehouse
6. kraloyun
7. dailymotion
8. bebo
9. wii
10. emule

Check out the rest of the report, including the US-only data, over at the official Zeitgeist site.
